Question:

What is a debt management plan?

Answer:

A debt management plan is a method used to repay debts. Most people who turn to this type of repayment plan need help because debts have become too difficult to pay or are taking up too much of the person’s income. When this occurs, the individuals must find a method to build a new plan to repay the debt owed. In most cases, this means turning to a third party organization or a debt settlement attorney for aid.

Debt Management Plans

The goal of a debt management plan is often to get debt repayment back on track, in a method that is affordable to the borrower but keeps the lender’s needs in mind as well. The third party organization often will work to do several things to make repayment occur.

  • The third party organization may work to find solutions for reducing interest rates charged by the lender.
  • Reducing the amount owed by removing late charges, over the limit fees or other fees may also be part of the process.
  • If the borrower has the ability to do so, the debt management plan may include making debt settlement payments which settle the debt for less than what is owed.
  • The third party organization often sets up a budget for the borrower to help him or her to better manage the debt.
  • A repayment plan often occurs in which the debt is paid off over a period of three to five years at a lower cost than it is being paid now.

Each debt management company is different and so are the plans created. The individual circumstances of the borrower and the debt play a role in the outcome of this plan.
