Question:

What are some warning signs of a debt settlement scam?

Answer:

More people are looking to eliminate their debt, and debt settlement scams are taking advantage of this fact. Knowing who to avoid can be difficult as some companies will put out a good song and dance. They actively bury any negative comment found on the Internet. What cannot be hidden are the signs that they are only there to take money and do nothing else.

  • Numbers do not add up. Settlement is supposed to reduce the interest rates and possibly negotiate the balances down. Seeing an offer to pay the entire debt with additional interest and fees is a scam.
  • Charging up front fees before getting started. This is a major flag. There is no incentive to do any work once they have the customer's money in hand.
  • Plenty of hand holding in the beginning, then they drop the customer like a hot potato. This ties in with charging up front fees. It differs in that there seems like there is something being done on the customer's behalf, when they're doing nothing but blowing smoke.
  • Promises that the debt will be paid off in a set number of years. It's a poor promise as it does not take into account any changes in interest rates or other financial fluctuations.
