Debt Relief And Debt Settlement Services

Debt settlement services can include those companies and individuals who help you to settle your debt for less than what you owe. Debt settlement services aim to provide debt relief by working with your creditors to either lower your payments, or to change the structure of your monthly debt so it becomes more affordable.

Types of Debt Settlement Services

There are numerous different types of debt settlement services you can work with who can help you settle debt:

  • Debt settlement companies may be a good option, but you need to be careful because there are some scammers out there who will make promises they can't keep or who will charge high fees
  • Non profit credit counseling services are generally an accredited company that provides debt advice to consumers. Some non profit credit counseling services will also negotiate with creditors to settle debt. Again, while most companies are reliable, you need to make sure you understand who you are working with and what fees you will be charged up front.
  • Debt consolidation or debt settlement attorneys often are a great bet when you want to settle debt. Attorneys are bound by a code of ethics to act as advocates for their clients and to act in their clients best interests. They may have extensive experience settling debt and great negotiation skills, combined with their established relationships with creditors, can help you settle debt for less.

What do Debt Settlement Services Do?

Debt settlement services will generally help you to create a plan for settling debt. The plan usually involves stopping payments to your debt. Creditors will be willing to negotiate, but only if they fear they won't get their money at all. Some debt settlement services will have you pay them the monthly payment instead, and they then save it to offer a settlement. Others simply have you save the money yourself.

Once you are behind on payments, the debt settlement service will propose a settlement to creditors for a percentage of debt. This may be a one time payment or a payment plan. If the creditor accepts, you then make the payment and your credit cards are usually closed by the creditor at that point. However, you are now done with that debt.

Getting Help

It is important to understand what services your debt settlement company will provide and how much those services will cost. An experienced debt settlement attorney will be up front on fees and services provided and can help you to negotiate the best possible deal to settle debt for less.
