How Safe are Debt Settlement Companies?

There are hundreds of debt settlement companies that have arisen since the 1990’s. The main focus of some of these companies is to provide debt relief and to assist indebted consumers in the daunting task of making payment arrangements or negotiating with credit companies on overdue debts. With the seemingly unlimited number of debt settlement companies in existence, on can often find themselves wondering if these companies are even legitimate.

The Purpose of a Debt Settlement Company

Most debt settlement companies function with a sole purpose- to assist people who have encountered problems with their unsecured debt. They have the leverage to talk credit card companies into negotiating an amount debtors can feasibly manage, and in most cases this amount ends up being less than the debtor originally owed.

Many people are extremely hesitant to contact one of these companies, usually for fear of judgment, but most debt settlement companies are staffed with professional credit counselors. The staff isn’t hired to judge or demean anyone, and consulting them should not be avoided out of fear.

Understanding the Available Options

When most people fall behind on credit card debt, or find that their payments are simply too much for them to afford, the first response is typically to contact the credit card company. This can leave many people frustrated, as the credit card companies don’t want you to seek help from a debt settlement company. They typically make less money in these cases, so they very rarely recommend it. In fact, most credit card companies will do anything they can to convince people not to seek assistance in order to keep their original balance due. Some will even go so far as to tell consumers that debt settlement is a scam, leaving many people confused.

Another option many people try is to contact a debt settlement company themselves. This is generally not advised, because the fact is there are companies out there that simply do not do what they claim. Many people who seek a debt settlement company on their own wind up paying a scam company to do basically nothing for them, and they end up still owing the entire balance to their creditor.

What is the Best Option?

Any time a person winds up in a situation where they’re seeking the assistance of a debt settlement company, the best thing they can do for themselves is to seek the opinion of a third party organization or company that is familiar with debt settlement and who can direct them toward a reputable agency. These third party organizations should have a long-standing knowledge of the industry, and have staff that can advise people to do what’s best for them in their current situation.  Not all debt settlement companies are frauds. There are many honest companies in operation, but consumers should be extremely careful in choosing which company is right for them.

Getting Help

Another great option involves avoiding the risk of working with a debt settlement company and instead working with a debt settlement attorney. Lawyers are held to a high set of moral and ethical standards and you can rest assured when you work with a debt settlement attorney, you will get exactly what you pay for and the highest quality of help available.
